Hi Everyone!
We are working hard to get through the pandemic. We’ve had a few of sick Puggos come through this month. One survived, two did not. It’s been a bit rough.
We have had a lot of inquiries regarding our adoptable friends. We currently have 2 nice lady Pugs that are available for adoption, which I have added to our “Adoptable Friends” tab. Our other dogs have medical holds, but after they’ve recovered, they’ll be posted too. For Adoptions, referrals are key! Home inspections used to be a huge part of the adoption process, but with the ongoing pandemic, we have had to make a lot of adjustments, which include a video-chat tour of applicants’ homes.
Let’s get excited for 2021! It may be different from what we were used to, but the Pugs don’t mind!

Hi Everyone,
I really needed to give you all a status update. I’m sorry for my absence. I’ve been going through a lot right now on a personal level, so I’m going just going to be open and candid. The El Paso Pug Rescue is in somewhat of an inactive state right now due to the pandemic. We are still accepting Pugs, but only if fosters are available. We are still providing medical treatment for those in need too. Unfortunately, we’re not able to complete adoptions at this time since we require home inspections and it is inappropriate to go into people’s homes right now. I may become willing to relax this stipulation in the near future; I’m considering virtual tours of adoption applicants’ homes. For now, the dogs that we have right now are currently safe in their foster homes and will remain there for the time being. If you are interested in any long-term fostering or fostering to adopt (“test-driving”), please send me an email.
Our vet bill is still climbing, but also because of the social climate, it feels a little tone-deaf to ask for money for Pugs when there are other more relevant causes helping people through the pandemic. I’m feeling so socially awkward about this topic and how to handle things right now. I just wanted to mention it, in case anyone is able to help us out and make a donation.

I’m excited to introduce the newest addition to the El Paso Pug Rescue family. We now have a dedicated Foster Coordinator, Bonnie Nelms.
Bonnie originally started as a foster, but her love for rescue made her want to do more, and now I’m happy to call her our Foster Coordinator. She basically is in charge of everything foster-related, which is A LOT! We really needed her help in a big bad way.
It actually happened pretty quickly! I usually only trust our nearest and dearest with the rescue, so I pretty much told Bonnie she needs to become like my best friend really fast. Not like in a creepy way, where I’m lonely and I used the rescue to make friends, but something like that. :D
In all seriousness though, Bonnie is a great person, and we really are super excited to have her.

I’m sorry for the lack of presence on the blog here. I started working full-time and now the rescue has to wait for me until after work or weekends. I wish there were more hours in the day so I could make equal time for the rescue and work, not to mention, my family too. I’ll be keeping you posted on the new doggos we get in the rescue. We'd like to thank everyone who came and supported our Pug-O-Ween event on Saturday and made it such a big success! We loved seeing all of the people, the pups, and their costumes. Check out these photos from the event!
It has been a while since I've posted anything, but I assure you that I have been very busy with the Pugs and the animal community.
I'm excited to announce that I have been appointed as a Board Member for the City of El Paso's Animal Shelter Advisory Committee. It's a great advancement for me, and I'm excited to serve on a city council committee that solely serves to protect animal welfare. I will be representing the animal welfare organizations in El Paso, and also District 5.
I even got a congratulatory letter and a certificate from Mayor Oscar Leeser! It's a pretty big deal! I have always been committed to protecting animals. I will do everything in my power to make the City of El Paso a better and safer place for all of the animals in our community.
The ASAC provides guidance and advice to all of the animal shelters located within the City of El Paso regarding compliance by the shelters with the requirements of Chapter 823, Texas Health and Safety Code and other applicable state regulations. Hello everyone!
I'm so happy to announce that our sweet Buzz found his forever home! He was adopted by wonderful people with two other senior Puggies. We will miss him very much, but we know that he is in great hands. His new family is a blessing not only to Buzz, but also to the El Paso Pug Rescue, and we are delighted to have them become a part of our rescue. His new family was so excited to have him, and we know they will give him an amazing life. We are so happy to see all of our dogs go to wonderful homes, and we know Buzz got one of the very best! We wish Buzz and his family so much love and happiness.

It's summer time, which means it's time to go on vacation or visit home for a lot of people. A few of our fosters will be out of town, so we are short on foster homes.
The only requirements to become a foster is that you have to be 21-years-old or older, agree to a background check, and agree to a home inspection. The home inspection simply is to assure that your home is a safe environment for a foster Pug. Even if you can only foster for a week or two at a time, we could still use your help as a temporary foster.
A big plus about being a foster with the El Paso Pug Rescue is that you get to spend time with the dogs before committing to adopt. Foster adoptions always take priority over outside adoptions. This means that if you fall in love with your foster dog, you can always adopt them, even if another adopter has already put in an application for them!

This is the hardest post I've ever had to write. Our precious baby Gunny passed away. He had a successful surgery, but there were complications during recovery. We were able to visit with him after the surgery. We talked to him and gave him a lot of love before letting him rest for the evening. We received the phone call several hours later that he became non-responsive. The staff tried their best to resuscitate him, but they could not revive him. In the medical report the doctor states that the cause of death was either due to upper airway compromise or an embolus. Since the surgery involved shaving some of the vertebral bodies to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, some bone or fatty tissue could've gone into the blood stream and caused an embolism.
Everyone at the Animal Neurology and Imaging Center was very kind. Dr. Brofman had come to El Paso for Gunny's MRI and got to spend a lot of time with him. He also performed the surgery. Dr. Brofman was very compassionate. He and all of the staff mourned with us. They did everything they could, and we are grateful that they tried their best for Gunny.
Gunny was a wonderful puppy and was very loved by everyone here at the El Paso Pug Rescue. Our hearts go out to his foster Heidi, to his other foster Christina and her family who were planning to adopt Gunny, and to his original family the Hergets who loved him so much they surrendered him so that he could get the surgery he so badly needed. He was only six months old, but the pressure on his spine was causing him pain and loss of function over his legs. The surgery was his best chance to have a good quality of life. We are eternally grateful to everyone who donated to his surgery.
We are all in pain over the loss of sweet baby Gunny. He will be forever in our hearts.
It's finally happening!!! We just got Gunny to Albuquerque, NM. The amazing people at The Animal Neurology & Imaging Center have agreed to allow us to make payments for Gunny's surgery. Their kindness will give us for more time to reach our goal without making Gunny wait for surgery!

This is Buzz! He's the newest foster in the El Paso Pug Rescue. Buzz is about 10 years old and full of life! He's a such a sweet guy. Buzz came in as a stray without a microchip. The family who found him put flyers all over their neighborhood and posted him on many Facebook pages, but they after 2 weeks of looking for his family, they gave him to the El Paso Pug Rescue. We looked for his family for another week (posting his pictures on Facebook, looking for missing flyers in his neighborhood, checking at Animal Services for anyone looking for him), but we have not found them. Buzz is in need of a new home now. Please visit our How To Adopt page if you'd like to open your home to Buzz.
We are asking for donations for an urgent, time-sensitive surgery for Gunny. Gunny is a 6 month old Bulldog puppy who is quickly losing his ability to walk. He has congenital kink in his spine. Gunny needs this surgery before his neurological damage becomes irreparable.
Every minute Gunny goes without surgery, the less likely the surgery will be able to save his leg function. This neurological surgery is very expensive because the veterinary surgeon will be operating on Gunny's spinal cord.

Hello everyone!
I'm happy to announce that our little Sù was adopted last week! She was a favorite of everyone here at the El Paso Pug Rescue. She was in very poor condition when she arrived, but she is a tough girl, and always had a positive and happy attitude. We will miss her very much, but we know that she is in great hands. Her new family was so excited to have her. They know what she has been through, and we know that they will give her an amazing life.

I want to take a moment to tell you about what the rescue community calls "Foster Failures."
It's meant as a humorous term! A Foster Failure is someone who was fostering an adoptable dog for a rescue, but they fell madly in love (head over heels!) for their foster dog and, well, decided they just couldn't let them go so they decided to adopt the dog themselves!
We had 3 foster failures in this month alone! Our foster adoptions take priority over outside adoptions since a foster has already opened their home to a homeless pup and gave them so much love when they needed it the most. Fostering is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, because it hurts so much to let them go. I hope our adoption applicants understand.
We have so much love and respect for our fosters. They selflessly open their homes to dogs who may be sick, or not housebroken, or injured; and they do it without hesitation. We couldn't do any of this without them.
On that note, we'd like to congratulate Milton, Daphne and Sora for finding their forever homes (even if they found it months ago!). We love these pups and their amazing fosters (I mean owners!), and we will them all the happiness in the world!
